Asus Eee PC 900

Asus Eee PC 900The Asus Eee PC 900 weighs in at a smidgen under 1kg (2.2lbs) and makes a superb ultra mobile laptop computer. The 8.9″ monitor gives just the right amount of room without needing a big bag to carry around in.

The custom version of Linux is aimed at making the Asus Eee PC 900 as easy to use as possible. It shares the same version of Linux as the rest of the Asus Eee laptops, however there is also an option to have Windows installed instead, the sacrifice is that the additional flash disk is smaller. The Linux install has specific programs included to perform functions like online phone calls, messaging emailing, office applications and web browsing.

The Asus Eee PC 900 offers a little more than the lower Asus Eee notebooks in the range.

The Asus Eee PC 900 has the following features:

  • Intel mobile CPU and chipset
  • 20GB SSD (12GB with Windows option)
  • 7.8 hours battery life
  • 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity
  • 1 GB of memory
  • Built-in camera, speakers and microphone

The Intel mobile CPU and chipset are a little behind the Atom processor featured on the Asus Eee PC 901. The mobile processor is aimed at saving power, while still delivering the power where it’s necessary. Saving power is not just about the processor though, and just turning off wireless when it’s not needed can keep batteries going longer.

The 8.9″ monitor gives more room for viewing documents and web pages. and aims to give just that little bit extra space to the desktop. The 1024 x 600 screen resolution is supposed to give enough room to more comfortable view documents without having to set the text size very small and squinting, or having to use the horizontal scroll bar to view the edges of the document. The screen resolution also allows most web pages to fit comfortably in the screen.

The Wi-Fi connection on the Asus Eee PC 900 is the standard for the Asus Eee computer range. 802.11b/g connectivity allow connection speeds of up to 54MB/s. This is dependent on network conditions though.

The same custom version of Linux that appears on the rest of the Asus Eee laptop range is featured on the Asus Eee PC 900. The interface is a simple one and presents a few menus with large icons for the basic set of installed programs.  The standard set includes the openoffice.org suite, skype, pidgin messaging, firefox and some learning games.

The 20GB of memory consists of 4GB built-in, just like the cheaper Asus eee notebooks, but with an extra 16GB of flash to fill up the extra. The 4GB is fine for the standard install, and the extra space only gives the option of moving slightly more and bigger files than with the standard 4GB. Still, the best advantage of flash is that it’s non-volatile, and is very resistant to bumps and knocks.
